Skydiving Photography – 120Mph Shutter speed

This is about as extreme photography can get. Jonathan Ran, Skydiving instructor and free-fly specialist, shares some of the experience and difficulties of photographing tandem skydiving.

“When Skydiving, pictures are taken at a high speed situation, with both the photographer and object are moving very fast, Both relative to each other (at least for the first few seconds) and to the environment (especially the ground…).”

The environment is also not very considerate:“Lighting is a problem because there is no time to play with camera settings, so before exiting the plane the photographer has to guess the best setting to work with all through the jump. The conditions constantly change as there are different cloud layers and other
variables that can affect the photo.”

“I think the results, although not the best, are good and speak for
themselves, considering the limitations the photographer has to deal with.”

Pictures taken using a Canon Digital EOS XT with a Canon 18-55 lens.
