Visual Music – Photographing musical instruments

I always say that a good exercise in photography is going somewhere you’ve never thought of as photography spot. Choosing a photography topic which isn’t in your “regular” line of items.

This time I went into a musical instruments shop, not by chance- but for trying this exercise on myself. In addition, I think musical instruments appeal to just about everyone, they have a charm of their own and usually nice to look at as well as listen to.

Asking politely from the shop management for permission to walk around and photograph is always a good idea, and you can offer some photos in return for the trouble, after doing so, I set myself up. Using my proven Olympus E-420 and the professional grade Olympus 12-60 lens, I added an external flash (Olympus FL-36R) and a diffuser to throw the light around (Gary Fong light sphere, nice toy).

Then all that was left was to walk around the different departments, choose my favorite instruments, compose, and shoot! It was challenging to think of original ways to photograph objects in a store, but mostly good fun.

With the result you can also make a nice photo collage with the theme you picked for the exercise.

If you’ve picked an unusual spot to photograph, let us see- publish your photos on The Wide Lens.
